1/29/08-The Discovery of the World Transformation of the World Economy o Naval architecture, galleys replaced by big sail boats (triangle sails) o New ships are important to reach out beyond European shores o Navigation tools were enhancing- compass o Prince Henry the navigator- 1394-1460= allows exploration around the African coast to establish more trade o Ability to get to Asia around Cape of Good hope started explorations, which lead to Magellan to go around the world o Columbus- he opens territory of the new world o Technologies- firearms, armor, weapons, political fractioning- all helped in the takeover of the indigenous people, small pox and influenza kills massive amounts of the people o New economic system centered on the Atlantic ocean o Spanish are principally interested in precious metal, o Silver becomes a very valuable commodity because of demand for it, you could trade with it for other items o Trade was seen all over the world, interaction with all people for trade o
