2/28/08 The Victorian Age The New Conservatism o Accept free market, accept nationalism (they begin to emphasis this), Can be seen as older values, but at the same time they are embracing new ideas o Benjamin Disraeli- he is an unusual conservative politicians, he is a famous writer, sort of utopian novels, he makes his own way in the world, furiously good debater, and good parliamentary tactician, o Chartism and this new Conservatism are battling Disraeli comes out and rights a charter and claims that conservative people made it, o Louis Napoleon- raised outside of France, he is a colorful figure, not very serious He runs for office of president against a great general who crushed Paris, he wins mainly because of his name He is only suppose to have one session, holds a plebiscite, Sets up an democratic rule, but he is really authoritarian Hardened believe in liberal ideals Supports the modernization of economy Though he is conservative, he does liberal things He is like Disraeli, he stays in power for 20years+ Vulture- criticism Victorianism- middle class o Queen Victoria 1837-1901 Her name is given for the Victorian age General term to talk about 19 th century o One way is a type of urban culture, the way of life which emerges in the middle class in the cities in 19 th century
