3/4/08 Nation Building New Nation o Otto Von Bismarck- he is unusual for his social class; he does more than drink beers and duel, he is fairly well traveled, he is more tuned to the outside world He also wants to insure the power of the aristocratic class, he believes in the royal power The 2 nd industrial Revolution o Rapid expansion after the Franco-Prussian war o 1870’s one of the worst depressions o The problem for Europe is that they could not match the production of Canada o Last stage of the second industrial revolution is, that machinery and textiles are available to almost anyone, meant that competition was increased o Response by government was Imperialism The argument that expanding ones empire you can solve these problems o This is the age of monopoly capitalism o Telephone it becomes a tool for communication and for business, people have a fear of this technology o Sewing machine allowed people to make clothing at home o Bicycle- gives you mobility for very cheap price
