Kunal Patel 2/05/07 Sociology 1 Assignment # 1 The five elements of culture are values, beliefs, norms, language and symbols. MS-13 possess all of these elements in a manner different that many other gangs or societies. They are a society like no other. “Live for the gang, die for the gang,” the beliefs of any MS-13 member. They are expected to defend their territory, recruit others, bring in money and prove toughness. All of this comes at the stake of their own lives. However, their lives mean nothing now, they are simply a product. Brainwashed as children, many are initiated before their tenth birthday. 13 seconds of brutal fighting, a tradition known as “jump in.” They have their own rules; they extort, smuggle and enforce their own laws.
