1. Boyle’s law states that the pressure of a gas is inversely proportional to its volume. This pertains to pulmonary ventilation in “when you inhale the diaphragm and rib cage expands. This increases the volume of the lungs and it decreases the pressure inside of the lungs. Air goes inside the lungs to become equal with the atmospheric pressure. When you exhale the diaphragm as well as the rib cage lowers, this decreases the volume inside of them and increases the pressure in the lungs. Gas has to move outside of the lungs until the pressure is equal with the atmosphere.” (McMurry et al. 2007) 2. In the model lung when the rubber diaphragm is pulled down the lungs, inflate. When the rubber diaphragm is pushed up, the lungs deflate. “When the diaphragm is pulled down the pressure inside of the plastic bell is decreased and the volume of the lungs is increased. The air that was inside of the plastic bell moves into the lungs. When the diaphragm is pushed up the volume in the plastic bell decreases and the pressure inside the lungs increases so it makes the lungs deflate. The air moves out of the lungs.” (UCSB 2005) 3.
