Unformatted text preview: ORGANIC CHEM IUPAC NAMING Basics- Find the parent name by counting the longest carbon chain. o The name of the parent hydrocarbon is changes slightly by the application of the highest priority functional group suffix. - Distinguish functional groups that are attached to the parent hydrocarbon (substituents) o The remaining functional groups are indicated by numbered prefixes, appearing in the name in alphabetical order from first to last. o Branched alkanes are names as a straight-chain with attached alkyl groups.
