Student Name____________________________________________CASE OF MBACKGROUND INFORMATION AND PRESENTING PROBLEMM. is a single, second-generation Mexican-American woman in her mid twenties. She initially presented in the month of December, with complaints of severe depression characterized by depressed affect, loss of appetite, sleep disturbance, fatigue, anhedonia, difficulty with concentration, feelings of worthlessness and excessive guilt; these symptoms had begun in October, approximately one month after entering graduate school. M. had dropped out of graduate school in November and returned to her parents’ home. M. reported that her first experience with depression was in her early teens, when she felt depressed, lethargic and had difficulty concentrating. She reported diagnosed depressive episodes in the fall/winter of her sophomore, junior and senior years of college. These episodes had been treated through her college mental health services with Trazedone and short term (10 sessions maximum) psychotherapy. She reported that these episodes generally resolved after this treatment and she would not seek treatment until her next depressive episode. M. experienced no depressive episode in the fall/winter of the year prior to presentation, when she had not been attending school. She reported her mother’s history of depressive symptoms (untreated) in her mother’s late teen/early adult years. M. Also stated that her father abused alcohol throughout her childhood, until her youngest brother was born. She denied any history or current substance abuse in herself.At the time of presentation, M. was living with her mother, father, uncle, and 2 of her 3 younger brothers. Both her parents were Mexican immigrants. Her father was a blue-collar worker and her mother was a homemaker. During M.’s childhood, the family lived with several members of their extended family and she reports that there was little privacy and much tension.
