The following criteria are guidelines for interpreting print ads; television ads function a bit differently, although some of these criteria can also be applied to them. Be aware that some of the following questions may not apply to all ads. NB: The following should not be used as the structure for any of the paragraphs in your essay. These criteria will help you analyze the components of an ad, but you will then need to use what you’ve discovered to create coherent, argumentative paragraphs. 1. N AME THE AD , the product or service advertised and its A) explicit message (i.e., what does the ad say to the viewer? what does it seek to sell and how?) B) underlying assumptions (does it deal in stereotypes? does it embrace a particular ideal, ideology or point of view?) C) implicit message (i.e., what does the ad not come right out and say, but what does it
