Jessie Durham 22 February, 2008 The Barbary Wars: American Independence in the Atlantic World It’s All About Getting the Booty The Barbary Wars: American Independence in the Atlantic World by Frank Lambert provides a lively and detailed chronology of the conflicts between the United States and Morocco, Algiers, and Tripoli from 1784 to 1816. Lambert writes that these wars were not necessarily the "holy" wars that many recent historians have called them. They were not wars of faith, and not wars that suddenly grew out of cultural difference. Rather, the Barbary Wars, primarily about trade, were essentially apart of America's struggle for independence. Despite my lack of affection for historical readings, I found Lambert’s book to be thoroughly easy to read and comprehend. However, I’m not sure if I would ever have a conversation arise in which I would recommend the book to others. Frank Lambert argues that these wars represent a victory for America's economic visions to come. Victory in these wars helped allow American shippers to sail the Atlantic and Mediterranean without fear of piracy and being taken hostage. The Barbary Wars were an extension of the country's struggle for freedom. After gaining political independence, America faced a major problem: As a country of traders, Americans had to rely on their previous rival to keep international commerce safe and free. And Britain was idealistically uninterested in helping the blossoming country. Britain and the rest of the
