2. Some of Gramsci’s Ideas: He was interested in trying to explain why the Proletarian revolution didn’t occur. He first talked about: a. Coercion and consent: he argued coercion (the threat) of physical force was one reason why the revolution never occurred. They knew the police and military would move into action if there was any threat towards the system. But Gramsci thought there was more to that, he turned to the notion of consent. He thought that the proletariat might consent to i.e., go along with their domination by the bourgeoisies. That would draw attention to the impact of capitalist ideology. That focus on ideology draws our attention to another key concept in Gramsci’s work- The concept of Hegemony b. The concept of Hegemony: crucial in Gramsci’s work. He saw hegemony as intellectual, moral and political leadership. This leadership is consensual, more specifically Gramsci saw hegemony as involving a dominant group i.e. bourgeoisies, exercising consensual leadership over a series of subordinate groups i.e., proletariat c.
