(Which is now Germany) Born into a family of Jewish background, his father was a lawyer His father had egalitarian views, (the importance of equality and freedom) Also had optimistic views (nature of humanity, potential for civilization to progress) University Education Enrolled as a law student at the university of Bonn (1835) Marx spent a lot of his time in his first year drinking, getting into fights and got arrested for rowdy behaviour For his second year of home, Marx transferred to the university of Berlin, this changed the entire course of Marx’s life In the law program, and decided to take some philosophy courses Became interested in Hegel Decided to switch from law to philosophy Completed his undergraduate studies in philosophy then went into graduate work in philosophy Completed a PHD in philosophy (1841) Securing Employment Wanted to be a professor but there was a problem by Marx’s thesis supervisor Marx got blacklisted by the ministry of education and so did his thesis supervisor
