I am on a placement at an emergency accommodation for families supporting them.I have one on one sessions with the families I work with every week. I have a familythat was not paying her rent, uses cannabis and also the children have lowattendance in school. At this placement, strength-based approach is to empower families through theirdifficulties. The placement is at a hostel which houses vulnerable families with high supportneed such as mental health or learning difficulties who are experiencinghomelessness. Some of these families can be on ‘children in need (CIN) plans, childprotection (CP) plans or even a public law outline (PLO).Some of these families suffer marginalisation and disempowered by their situation. At the hostel, family key workers uses the strength-based approach during supportsession. Assisting them with everything the families need. For example, schoolapplication, budgeting. We used person-centred approach to assist them to set theiraims and how they may achieve them.Task-centred is used alongside strength-based approach.Below is an example of how the essay should lookThe Department of Health and Social Care (2019) defines the strengths-based approach(SBA) as a collaborative process between the person supported by services and thosesupporting them, allowing them to work together to determine an outcome that draws on theperson’s strengths and assets. The SBA focuses on empowering families through theircircumstances. The SBA is not an outcome or a process, but the aim is to enable people tomake better choices and decisions over their lives. The SBA is also not a one-size-fits-all, orproviding less support, but instead should be a holistic and co-productive approach thatkeeps families at the centre of care and support (Department of Health and Social Care,2019).The placement context referred to within this essay is a hostel which houses vulnerablefamilies with high support needs such as substance misuse, mental health or learningdifficulties who are experiencing homelessness. Families within the hostel can be on‘children in need' (CIN) plans, child protection (CP) plans or even a public law outline (PLO).
