PL SC 014 Friday, March 26th, 1999 Announcements: Next week there will be a quiz on Africa. We also got back our midterms. Lecture notes: I. Africa A. Book has two mistakes 1. Zimbabwe and Zambia are switched 2. Zaire is now the Democratic Republic of Congo B. Sierra Leone 1. There has been a series of coupes there over the past few years 2. Nigeria sent in troops to help support the government; at first they were defeated by the rebels, but later won and were able to restore the president to power C. Libya 1. It is believed that the suspects responsible for the TWA bombing over Scotland are living there. 2. The US is currently in negotiations with the government so the suspects can be extradited to the US to face charges. D. Algeria 1. 50,000 people were killed during the war between the Islamic Fundamentalists and the secular Algerian government. E. Egypt 1. They were the first to sign a peace accord with the Israel government 2. As a result they recieve the second largest amount in forgein aid for
