HDF 302Week 1 Concept WorksheetYou read about the different ways very young children have been treated throughout history. What doyou think historians would say about how we treat and think about our young children today? Providesome examples.Ancient Greece and Rome (200 B.C. – A.D. 300)-Harsh upbringings, wrapped in tight swaddles to mold babies, bathed in cold water, limbswere stretched, squished skullBiblical Period (2000 B.C. – 500 B.C.)-Loving care, blessing for holy life, discipline, respect, education, infanticideThe way children have been raised throughout history has changed drastically. As the centuries havepassed, childhood has become easier. In ancient Greece and Rome, children were treated harshly toshape them into “golden citizens.” Parents believed that harsh treatment was a showcase of theirlove. Moving into Biblical times, the parenting style changed quite a bit. A common practice duringthis time was infanticide, the ritual where the oldest male child was murdered. Besides that, theBible tells of loving relationships between children and parents. Preparation for a loving and holy lifewere of the utmost importance. Proper discipline, respect for the child, and a quality education werealso valued very highly.I believe that modern parenting is very similar to Biblical parenting. To me, a good parent will lovetheir child, respect their child, properly discipline their child, allow their child to make mistakes, andsupport their child. I believe historians would say that we have made great headway in the treatmentof our children. However, I do know that some people believe that the younger generations are“soft”. That getting hurt and learning lessons the hard way builds character. That we are too sensitiveto jargon and culture. People on the other end of that spectrum believe that we are becoming forinclusive and socially aware. I personally believe that we have good progress and will only get betteras time goes on. It is hard to tell what historians would say, it depends on their own personal beliefson parenting.
Theorists think about children in different ways. One of the key differences is what they think most
