General Comparative Medicine Laboratory Animal Facilities (CMLAF) Policies Authority The University at Buffalo Comparative Medicine Laboratory Animal Facility operates under certification from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and, The New York State Department of Health (NYS DOH), and is accredited by The Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care International (AAALAC International). The program of animal care and use is overseen by the Universities own Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) in conjunction with the Director of the CMLAF. Access Access to CMLAF facilities is granted via an individual’s UB Card after completion of CMLAF Access Request Form, and the completion of the requirements indicated on the form. The link to the form is below. Access is granted to individuals who are directly involved with the use of animals in IACUC approved research protocols that are housed in one of The University at Buffalo’s Laboratory Animal Facilities. The level of access granted is dependent on the specific requirement to enter the facility. The levels of access are: Monday – Friday 7:00 AM – 7:00 PM, Daily 7:00 AM – 7:00 PM, or 24/7 Access. The principal investigators decide the access level for members of their staff. Room keys for individual rooms may be obtained as required by completing the Key Request Form. The facility within the Biomedical Education Building has an elevator that requires a key for operation a key may be obtained by requesting one in person in the main office of the CMLAF 116 BEB. Camera surveillance For your safety video surveillance is in operation 24/7 in all CMLAF facilities Hours of Operation All rooms are unlocked by 8:00 AM and locked by 3:00 PM Monday – Friday. For access outside of these hours please request a key. (See access above) The main office and the business offices of the CMLAF operate Monday – Friday from 7:30 AM – 5:00 PM

The animal care staff is on duty Monday – Friday 7:30 AM – 3:30 PM and on the weekends from approximately 8:00 AM – 11:00 AM. The Veterinary staff is on duty from Monday – Friday from 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM. In addition the veterinarians are on a rotating on call schedule. The schedule and contact information is located outside BEB 116 the veterinary technicians’ office BEB 204 and on line at General Policies Universal precautions should be practiced throughout all CMLAF facilities: No Unauthorized access: No children, friends or family members are allowed within the animal facility without prior approval of the Director No eating or drinking except in designated areas No entry with open toed shoes Enrollment in the Occupational Risk Program is mandatory: See link below to enrollment form.
