Bajzek Address Resolution Two situations where an address needs to be “resolved” in order to proceed: To translate a symbolic address (i.e., a domain name, at Layer-5) to a numeric address (an IP-address, at Layer-3) To translate an IP-address (Layer-3) to a hardware address (Layer-2) The Domain Name System does the Layer-5 to Layer-3 translation The Address Resolution Protocol (ARP) does the Layer-3 to Layer-2 translation

Bajzek ARP- Address Resolution Protocol ARP is used to convey mappings of known IP-addresses (Layer-3) to unknown data link addresses (Layer-2, or MAC addresses) (Hardware interfaces don’t know about IP-addresses) Requester broadcasts an ARP request on its segment Including requester’s MAC address for the recipient’s use The owner of that IP-address (if there is one) replies with its MAC (Layer-2) address Hosts cache ARP mappings for a period of time to avoid unneeded requests Hosts joining the network broadcast their mapping when they join to reduce future overhead
