Chapter 34 The Great Depression and the New Deal A. Great Depression 1. 1932 election a. Republicans- Hoover Inc. b. Democrat-FDR- contracted polio when he was a boy. Promises to balance budget. 2. New Deal a. 3 Rs- 1. Relief- Help the people who are being affected by the Depression 2. Recovery- Break the downward spiral of the depression and get people back into jobs. He does this by pump priming 3. Reform- b. alphabet soup agencies c. Bank Holiday-Roosevelt did it so they could evaluate all the banks and make sure that all the good banks were open while the bad ones would be closed d. Hundred Days- The first 3 months of the Roosevelt presidency. Roosevelt called a special session in Congress (Congress wasn’t scheduled to meet for a while). The Democrat led congress was able to pass a lot of alphabet soup agencies. e. Glass-Steagall Act FDIC- Insured people’s money up to $5,000 f. US-> goes off the gold standard They did this to cause inflation
