Persuasion There are many ways to influence the attitude of a person. If the attitude of the person actually changes, it is called persuasion (Text, p.194). The Elaboration Likelihood Model is a model that can predict if an attitude change will occur when one uses different types of persuasive communication, like words or images. Elaboration is the amount that one actually thinks about a persuasive argument before deciding whether or not to change his or her attitude (Lecture, 10/22/07). It is what determines if the central route processes or the peripheral route processes actually lead to the change in attitude. The central route towards persuasion occurs when elaboration is higher (Lecture, 10/22/07). When elaboration is higher, one is thinking more about the argument. Therefore, the actual strength of the argument matters. This route only occurs when the person is motivated and able to think deeply about the argument (Lecture, 10/22/07).
