The Influence of Other People The field of social psychology encompasses an extremely wide variety of topics relating to how people engage and interact. Throughout these topics, however, there are a few constant themes. One theme that stood out to me was how people are influenced by other people much more than they realize. There are areas in which people know they are being influenced, such as obedience, but there are also many areas in which people are subconsciously influenced by others, and people who have not studied social psychology do not know that it is happening. The three social psychological theories that illustrate this theme the best are the Social-Comparison Theory, the Norm of Liking, and the Social Facilitation Theory. The Social-Comparison Theory states that people use other people as a standard against whom they can evaluate themselves, and this helps us to define our thoughts, beliefs, emotions and abilities (Lecture, 10/1/07). When an objective standard is available, we will use that, but when it is not, we will use another person who is similar to us. The more comparable the person
