Matt Griffin Theatre Survey 2000 Sect. 0001 Martin Wootton Play #1 Musical Fiddler on the Roof Fiddler on the Roof takes place in Anatevka, a small village in Russia, on the eve of the Russian Revolution, in 1905. The village contained a very small amount of people, and everybody knew each other. Tevye was the main character and was very protective of his kids who were trying to get married, while he was trying to keep a religious tradition, which his kids did not want to follow. The play took place in small areas like Tevye’s house, a wedding, a Mordcha's inn, and even one of Tevye’s made up dreams. At Tevye's home, everyone is busy preparing for the Sabbath meal. Yente, the matchmaker, tells Golde that Lazar Wolf, the town's butcher and a wealthy man, older than Tevye, wants to marry Tzeitel, the oldest daughter. Yet she does not want to marry Lazar Wolf, she wants to marry Matol a tailor. She breaks the tradition that everybody follows. Then Tevye meets a man named Perchik, who agrees to teach his kids for food. At first unsure how to break the news to his wife Golde, Tevye concocts a dream in
