Chin 155 29/02/2008 12:28:00 55 The Queen Mother of the West (Birrell, pg 171-176, and elsewhere) She resides on Jade Peak in Kunlun Mountains She has the upper body of a human She has a leopard’s (or panther’s, or tiger’s) tail and teeth of a tiger She wears a  sheng  hair ornament She is associated with immortality She prepares elixirs of immortality from vegetation in her garden Rabbits (hares) help her make the elixir She is given a “counterpart” in the east called the King Father of the East She is said to have been visited by King Mu of the Zhou dynasty  She is said to have visited Emperor Wu of the Han dynasty In later accounts she is portrayed as a beautiful woman She becomes quite important in later popular lore In the picture At 12’o clock there is a bar going across her eyes ( sheng ) She is portrayed as being human; she is on a throne with the head of a tiger  and some sort of tail.   Canopy above queen mother’s head, supports of the canopy form a gourd.
