Chin Myth 28/03/2008 10:18:00 Immortality (xian, hsien) Goal was to attain long life To go to heaven or a land of immortals To gain long earthly life Common foods were to be avoided (grains, meats, etc.) Special diet was used Elixirs/potions/drugs were ingested = Chinese alchemy Drugs often included cinnabar and other precious  substances (jade, gold, etc.) Cinnabar is a sulfide of mercury When ingested it causes blood vessels to break This give a ruddy complexion (which was considered  youthful) Also fungi and other plants were eaten Immortals could reside in heaven (eventually there were  several) Immortals lived in the Isles of the Blest (Penglai) in the  Eastern Sea The Isles of the Blest were originally 5 They were carried on the backs of giant sea turtles 2 were caught by a giant with a fishhook, leaving 3 islands:
