Chin myth 02/04/2008 10:54:00 The Eight Immortals The Eight Immortals are a fairly modern grouping Some of the eight were historical people The Eight Immortals are often portrayed in carvings and paintings riding on a  boat crossing the ocean Each of the eight is associated with certain groups of people 1. Zhongli Quan o Portrayed as bearded and fat o Carries a fan (sometimes a sword instead) o He was a Han general o Associated with military men In the picture: Above him a bird is holding something in his hand.  The  bird is likely a crane.  Cranes are also associated with  longevity and immortality. If the tree has needles rather than leaves: evergreens are  associated with immortality  2. He Xiangu o Portrayed as an attractive young woman o Wears an expensive robe o Supposedly lived during the Tang dynasty o Became immortal in 705
