Modern History II Notes – 4/19/07 Decolonization II Cold War began to play a larger role in the process of decolonization after the success in India Indochina – Vietnam o Loose colony of three different areas, about 1.5x France, largest of the three regions was  Vietnam o French interest in the region began in the 1830s with missionary endeavors, but colonial  occupation didn’t begin until the 1850s o Resistance to French emerged early, very organized nationalist movements that called for  self-determination and independence by WWI, continued to build strength through WWII o 1940 – German troops marched into Paris and the French assembly disbanded and  handed power over to the Vichy regime – collaborated with the Nazis As a result of German occupation, French colonial power really became  questioned o Much of Asia was being occupied by Japan, this included Indochina o In Indochina, the Japanese were able to capitalize on the growing doubts of French  colonization, and the Japanese leaders employed anti-imperialist and –West sentiment to  the leaders of Indochina o Surrender of Japan in 1945 brought independence questions back to frontburner o End of WWI, France’s empire had reached its greatest extent and was second only to the  British empire o French colonies were to play a significant role o French saw that if they were going to reassert influence they would have to do it  differently because the nationalist movement was growing Gave Vietnam a level of self-rule Varying levels of local assemblies and local ministers which increase the  level of Vietnamese influence in local politics – still wasn’t independence
