Modern History II Notes – 5/3/07 To Today Industrial revolution – process of economic change – development of capitalism into its next  historical phase   merchant capitalism of the 18 th  century to industrial capitalism of the 19 th  century Politically during the same period – Age of Revolution Kingdoms of Western Europe and their trans-Atlantic empires Massive political turmoil o Britain, Spain, France’s empires become splintered French Revolution – monarchy in France that created new kingdom fell First part of 19 th  century – rapid economic growth and political turmoil at the same time – very  weak political states after the Age of Revolution o United States divided on slavery o Latin America is politically chaotic Europeans in the 1830s/40s became increasingly fed up with their governments as the IR had  transformed society
