1/16/08 What is Religion? Religare – To bind The religion defines and confines myself and the obligations I have to the world around me. How do we bind our actions? Bind us through a system of Ethics : -The Ten Commandments - Buddhism, would resist classifying themselves as a ethical system. They resist the notion that their behavioral guides are practical guides. Ethics provide us with moral guides. Bind us through a system of Ritual: -A catholic mass, procession- they carry the crucifix into the worship space before starting. Recession- they carry the crucifix again to lead the worshipers “out to the world.” Ritual- serves to order life. Causes us to behave and function in certain ways. Bind us through a system of Belief: -Christians believe in the Apostles creed. It is a summary of basic Christian doctrine. Belief- Propositions What is religion according to the U.S. supreme court? U.S. vs. Seeger (1961) The appropriate test of whether something is a valid religion is whether it “is sincere & meaningful and occupies a place in the life of an individual parallel to that of a belief in God” What is religion according to Carl Marx? It is a device through which the masses have been effectively given a pass to avoid expressing themselves in their own individual rights. Religion provides a false sense of hope for individuals. What is religion according to Paul Telic? Religion is that what is one’s ultimate concern. What is religion according to the Cambridge encyclopedia? There is no one definition for religion.
