Lab Report – Stereochemistry of Alkenes Keira Wilson 11/10/15 Ghaith Altawallbeh The purpose of this experiment was to observe how pi bonds in an alkene react with the addition of a halide and to observe how maleic acid is converted to fumeric acid. By utilizing recrystallization, we are able to achieve this and test the purity of the compounds using melting point and thin layer chromatography. Reaction Mechanism (INCLUDING ARROWS FOR THE ELECTRON FLOW!) Results We found that the crystals in our experiments were very long and had a cylindrical shaped. In determining the melting point of our crystals we found that our sample also exhibited a very high melting point of 284 degrees Celsius. We dissolved 2 mg of our product in methylene chloride and spotted it on the TLC place, developed in ethyl acetate, and found that the crystal compound traveled the farthest up the TLC plate followed by the fumaric acid.
