[LECTURE 2 CHEMICAL LEVEL OF ORGANIZATION]Anatomy and Physiology 1Dr. Claudie Biggers |1Why study chemistry in an anatomy and physiology class?Physiology is the study of function that involves chemical reactions. The first 3 simple levels of the Biological Hierarchy of Organization of thehuman organism are part of chemistry.1.Atom2.Molecule3.Macromolecular: simple molecules joined to form a complex chemicalstructure. Ex: proteins, carbohydrates, DNA, fatsHave you ever had dihydrogen oxide? H20The most difficult part of chemistry is the terminology. The simple act ofreading food ingredients can be difficult.Matter: anything that occupies space and has mass (weight).Mass: the actual physical weight of matter.Weight: the force of gravity acting on mass.Volume: The space matter occupies.3 States of Matter1.Solid: (teeth bones)2.Liquid: (blood)3.Gas: (air we breathe)Matter is the substance and energy is the mover. All 3 forms are interchangeableWhen you add heat, ice melts to a liquid, more heat makes the liquid boiland release vapors. Then reverse the process. Collect the vapors and letcool, it will return to a liquid, freeze it and it will become a solid again.
[LECTURE 2 CHEMICAL LEVEL OF ORGANIZATION]Anatomy and Physiology 1Dr. Claudie Biggers |2Forms of Energy in the BodyChemical: chemical rx that change potential to kinetic.Electrical: movement of charged particles.Mechanical: energy directly involved in moving matter.Radiant Energy: (electromagnetic spectrum) ex: rays, UV, light, energytravels in waves.rx: means reactionAdenosine TriphospateAdenosine Triphospate or ATP is the most fundamental form of energy inliving systems.Energy is converted from one form to another. It is inefficient because heatis released and energy is lost. Therefore, energy can neither be created nor destroyed just transformed. We are warm blooded because all energy conversion in the body releasesheat = 98.6 temp.Increase temp = increase chemical rxElementsMatter is made-up of elements. Each element is represented by a symbol. Usually the first 2 letters of theelements name. Elements that are more common have a single lettersymbol. Ex Hydrogen HThere are a few exceptions: Ag is Argentum meaning silver.Elements are pure substances made up of one single atom type that cannotbe broken down into simpler substances by chemical methods.EX: oxygen, carbon, gold, silver.Carbon, Hydrogen, Oxygen, Nitrogen = 95% body weightThere are 20 elements in the human body that gives the total weight.Oxygen 65%Sodium 0.2%Carbon 18.6%
