Kennedy 1 Kate Kennedy Dr. Bsumek SCOM 240 20 March 2008 Madison Cup Debate Assignment I attended the 11:00 debate in Taylor Hall. For a bit of background information, the teams debating for the affirmative were Appalachian State, Johns Hopkins, and University of Mary Washington. On the other side, the debaters were from CSU Chico, Clarion University, and Liberty. The debate was about whether or not the United States should chart a new course toward peace in the Middle East. This debate was incredibly interesting given the requirements of this assignment as I was looking more into how believable the speaker was as opposed to whether or not agreed with their point of view. As the speakers took the podium, they were all sure to introduce themselves as well as thank JMU for hosting the event. Not one of the speakers forgot to thank the judges, the audience, and JMU. I believe that this helped the audience feel important and captivated by the speaker immediately, as they felt they were somewhat important. The first speaker from Appalachian State lost credibility with me right away. She referred to President Bush as simply “Bush.” I am no fan of President Bush by any means, but I would never attempt to argue a point regarding government without using respectful terminology for the leader of a country.
