ARTH275: Visual Analysis Paper National Museum of Natural History African Voices D UE  D ATE Tuesday, October 2, 2007, in lecture I NSTRUCTIONS : This assignment requires that you visit the  African Voices  exhibition at the National Museum of Natural History in  Washington, DC. It is designed to develop your skills of "intelligent seeing." You will need to spend a good deal of  time in front of the work you choose, so please plan accordingly. Remember to bring a notebook and pencil to record  your observations. You are to use  no  outside sources for this project: this includes the museum's website on the  exhibition. 1. Please select  one  of the following objects from  African Voices  for your visual analysis paper: Sande society mask, Mende Kibango staff, Luba Guardian figure, Kota Ci-wara , antelope headdress, Bamana Linguist staff finials, Akan (choose one) Commemorative head of an  oba , king, Edo, Benin Kingdom Wall plaque of war chief, Edo, Benin Kingdom (figure with feather in helmet) Male figure, Kongo Female grave marker, Kongo 2. On a separate page, record the label information for the object as well as a brief description of the other objects  installed with it in the exhibition case. 3. For the paper (2 pages), describe the key visual characteristics of the object. Consider the following questions.
