10/17/06 CCJS230 – Section 0201 Issues with Heroin Distribution in Maryland Heroin is semi-synthetic opioid and is derived from morphine. It was originally invented by chemists who were researching medicine (Wikipedia, 2006). Heroin is now an illicit narcotic in the United States and its trafficking is a major issue in the State of Maryland because of the danger that the traffickers present and the danger that the drug itself presents. For these reasons, heroin should be criminalized in the State of Maryland. The City of Baltimore has been called the “Heroin Capital of the United States.” The city’s widespread use of the popular drug has gained itself national attention in a very negative light. It has been reported on in several newspapers and national television as well as being the location for the hit HBO drama “The Wire”. While heroin is a major issue in the City of Baltimore, it has also spread out into the rest of the state, especially around the Baltimore-Washington Parkway where many heroin traffickers have been
