FOG· Carl Sandburg

The fog comes
on little cat feet²
It sits looking
over harbor and city
on silent haunches
and then moves on²
This tiny poem may only be ³µ words´ but it is full of depth and beauty² The fog is personified in the image of the cat² They
both have the same characteristics´ such as coming without warning´ and unexpected silence² As a cat may creep onto a
table´ or a window sill²²The fog creeps into´ and over the city²
¸Fog¸ was first published in a collection of poems´ Chicago Poems´ by Carl Sandburg²
In the poem´ there is a clear indication of the influx of industry in the ³°th century in Chicago; the line “over harbor and city” is
simple´ but give the reader a strong image²
