Synopsis of the case
In order to improve Restview Hospital's account billing system, facility administrator Jack
Morelli asked accounting manager Mary Carter to look into existing software solutions that best
meet their needs. Despite the fact that standard software was not a good alternative to examine,
Mary Carter, under the influence of Jack Morelli, included it in the list, along with two suitable
vendors. Following each of the selected vendors' presentations, Mary Carter drafted a report
concluding that the software from Reliable Computer was definitely the best option for the
hospital. Regardless of the report, Jack Morelli used his authority and influence to persuade the
board to buy a software package from Standard, whose president was a personal friend of his.
