Music History Lecture 10/21/13 Monday Claudia Gorbman – Classical Hollywood Model (Key points from last lecture) Dialogue over music High synchronization between music and action Music sustains continuity Music controls narrative connotation Use of symphonic, Romantic era music Another two key points Synchronized music to what’s happening on screen o For ex, when Robin Hood falls into the water, the orchestra plays a cue o “Mickey-mousing” Welcome to Sherwood in (The Adventures of Robinhood) Scene before they ambushed the lady and the sir guy When they’re falling, you have the “sliding down the violin” sound o Imitates them falling down Follows the classical Hollywood model o Creates a continuous link between all the events leading up to one place Has a military connotation Happening all at the same time o During the battle, robin hood’s theme goes on (Music controls the narrative connotation) Battle is seen as fun, or a prank
