Mineral Resources Important Concepts o Types of Mineral Deposits Metallic- ore deposits Non metallic/crystalline Non crystalline o Distribution of mineral resources o Geopolitics o Mineral resources and technology Metallic and non-metallic mineral resources o Metallic minerals- contain metallic elements, such as gold, silver, iron, and aluminum o Non-metallic minerals- composed of non-metal bearing elements o Native metals- consists only of metal atoms. Ex. Gold, copper, silver o Metallic compounds-composed of metallic and other atoms such as sulfur and oxygen Ore minerals and ore deposits o Ore (economic) mineral- mineral having a high concentration of a metal o Ore deposit- an accumulation of ore minerals that can be extracted processed and transported economically. Economic factors o Concentration factor Metal concentration in ore Average metal concentration in continental crust o Current and projected price o Size of deposit o Mining costs o Processing (milling, smelting)
