In this exercise you will examine the concept of limiting reactants by using a fixed amount of one reagent and varying the amount of the second reagent used for the chemical reaction. A graph of the moles of hydrogen gas produced versus the moles of the reagent being varied will enable you to determine the point at which the stoichiometric balance for the reaction has been obtained. This will be compared with the calculated vales to determine the success of the experiment. Introduction There are almost no perfectly complete reactions in chemistry. Almost all reactions are governed by a principle of limiting reagents. The best example of limiting reagents in everyday terminology is to think of chemistry reactions as baking. To bake a cake a recipie requires 3 eggs and 2 cups of four. Say there are 3 eggs present and 4 cups of flour in reality. Only one cake can be made because there are not enough eggs for a second cake. The eggs in this example are what are referred to as the limiting reagent. In other words the limiting reagent is what dictates the amount of precipitate formed in a reaction. The excess reactant is the reactant that is more abundant than necessary to consume all of the limiting reactant (140). In the following experiment trials are done with two different constants to determine the limiting reagents for each reaction are both poles of the reaction. In one trial HCl is varied, and in another reaction Mg Metal is varied. This is done so to show the difference in limiting reactions at different points in an experiment and to used graphs in order to determine the stoichiometric number for the balanced equations of the reaction.
