1/16/08 BIOL 002 Lecture 2 study outline Reading: Chapter 8 (pages 143-145, 147-154, 157-158) Chapter 9 (pages 160-161) Objectives: Why are ATP and enzymes so important in biology? Important points to understand and remember: Enzymes do not alter the DIRECTION of reaction -- only the RATE Change in free energy ( G) only predicts DIRECTION of reaction -- not its rate ATP influences DIRECTIONs of reactions in the cell Enzymes allow the reactions to happen fast enough to have real effects PREFACE: What we are examining is chemical reactions in biological organisms Consider a chemical reaction: A + B ↔ C + D We want to know two important things about it: 1. Which DIRECTION will it proceed? 2. How FAST will it proceed? Question #1 is determined by chemical thermodynamics ("energetics") Question #2 is the subject of reaction kinetics We'll look at #2 first. In biology, reaction rates are controlled through enyzymes. We do this first because it connects to end of last lecture: structure of proteins
