Unformatted text preview: Determination of an Equilibrium Constant Laura Boucher and Amanda Quella Section 2107 Simon Duri 8 April 2008 Objective The purpose of this lab is to use the spectrophotometer to determine the value of K in various premade solutions. Procedure Calibration of Fe(SCN) 2+ Make 8 solutions total Prepare all solutions using a 10 mL flask Add 2 mL of 0.2 M Fe(NO 3 ) 3 in 0.1 M nitric acid Add unknown amount of 0.002 M NaSCN in 0.1 M HNO 3 Amounts of the 8 solutions should vary between 0.00 mL and 1 mL Dilute to the mark using 0.1 M HNO 3 and an eye dropper After reagents are mixed tightly close with stopper Set spectrophotometer to 447 nm Place 2 mL of blank solution in the cuvet Set absorbance to zero and get the absorbance of all the other solutions Repeat with all remaining solutions and record in the lab notebook Equilibrium Mixtures To each flask add 5 mL of 0.002 M Fe(NO 3 ) 3 in 0.1 M nitric acid Add a known amount of 0.002 M NaSCN in 0.1 M nit ric acidAdd a known amount of 0....
