Purpose: The purpose of this laboratory is to determine the change in enthalpy when two substances are mixed together. Procedure : Determination of Enthalpy for 2.0 M NaOH and 2.0 M HCl 1. Designate three graduated cylinders for an acid, base, and water. 2. 50 mL of 2.0 M NaOH was added to a Styrofoam cup 3. The temperature of the NaOH in the cup was measured for 3 minutes with 30 second increments 4. The graduated cylinder designated for acids was rinsed with 2.0 M HCl 5. The same graduated cylinder was used to add 50 mL of 2.0 M HCl to the Styrofoam cup that contains the NaOH 6. The temperature of the solution was then measured for 5 minutes and recorded in 30 second increments Determination of Enthalpy for the dilution of 2.0 M NaOH 7. 50 mL of H2O was added to a Styrofoam cup 8. The temperature of the H2O in the cup was measured for 3 minutes with 30 second increments 9. The graduated cylinder designated for bases was rinsed with 2.0 M NaCl 10. The same graduated cylinder was used to add 50 mL of 2.0 M NaCl to the Styrofoam cup that contains the H2O 11.
