Lab Experiment – 62.1/2 Name: Mansi Mehta Date: 04/14/2008 Lab Partners: Lidia Title: Chemiluminescence Part 1 and 2 Purpose: In this experiment, we obtain a diester by treating diacid chloride oxalyl chloride with a phenol dissolved in toluene in the presence of an amine. After cooling of the mixture, the product crystallizes. Thereafter, the mixture of solids obtained by performing filtration is washed with water to remove the amine hydrochloride. Then, the solid diester is collected by filtration, dried, and then recrystallized from toluene. Procedure: (Part 1) 1. Dissolve 2.059g of 2, 4, 6-tricholorphenol into 15mLs of Toluene in a 50mL of round bottom flask. 2. Put the round bottom flask in an ice bath and slowly add 0.638g of triethylamine to the flask. Swirl to dissolve. 3. After dissociation is complete, slowly add 0.5g or 6 drops of oxalyl chloride to the flask. 4. Reflux the mixture gently for 30 minutes. (Part 2):
