Beethoven: Symphony No 5 1 st movement (p 201) (2) 45 BAROQUE PERIOD (1600-1750) Handel: Bach: Other baroque composers were Monteverdi, Purcell, Corelli, Vivaldi Early baroque was revolutionary Early baroque composers favored homophonic texture over polyphonic texture Late baroque instrumental music became as popular as vocal music for the first time CHARACTERISTICS OF BAROQUE MUSIC Unity of Mood: usually represent one mood at a time. These moods are also called affections Rhythm: unity of mood is conveyed by continuity of rhythm Melody: repetition of a musical idea at higher of lower pitch levels also called Melodic Sequence Dynamics: There is continuity of dynamic level. When dynamics do shift it is usually very sudden this is called terrace dynamics Basso Continuo (figured bass): an accompaniment that is made up of a bass line with numbers that specify which chords should be played above it The Baroque Orchestra: the orchestra evolved into a performing group based on instruments of the violin family. Consists of 10 to 40 players. Movement: a piece that sounds fairly complete and independent but is part of a larger composition
