Assessing energy performance of buildingsHow to gauge building energy performance to gold/platinum standard?
Normalized Performance Indicators (NPI) (I)Comparing energy performance of different buildings needsto take into account confounding factors:The buildings may be of different sizes. The locations may have different climates. This will influence theamount of energy consumed by the two buildings. The buildings may experience different levels of exposure, which will influence building heat loss. The buildings may experience different operating hours. The buildings may have different occupancy.Correct the energy consumption data for the above variablesbynormalizationfactors (multiply or divide).
Normalized performance indicators (NPI) (II)Energy performance can only be compared for similar typesof buildings.Weather:(standard annual degree days of heating (UK): 2462)Heating (cooling) degree daysHeat/cooling energy consumption depends on both the temperatureand the duration of that heating/cooling need.Degree day is calculated in reference to a base temperature, below(or above) which heating (or cooling) is required.Correctionbynormalizing:
Heating (cooling) degree days calculationFor example, base temperature for heating is 15.5°C in UK.If theexternal temperature in a location of UK is 12.5°C for 10 days, 10.5°Cfor 15 days, etc.Cooling degree days can be calculated by analyzing duration of days withtemperature higher than the base temperature.Heating degree days at 12.5°C:(15.512.5)10 = 30Heating degree days at 10.5°C:(15.510.5)15 = 75Annual degree days of heating:30 + 75 + ……Weather coefficient:standard annual degree days of heatingAnnual degree days of heating for the buildingIf building > standard,WC < 1,decreasethe energy consumption number.
