He has to separate to gain fame. From the spoils they brought back, Achilles took Briseis and Agamemnon took Chryseis, the priests daughter. The priest asked Apollo to cast a plague on the Greeks (Achaeans). The Greeks became very ill and sick, then officials gathered around Agamemnon for him to reconsider. Being of the highest rank Agamemnon did not want to be the only person to lose his prize. So he takes the prize of another in replace for giving back Chryseis; thus taking Briseis. Felt insulted by Agamemnon for saying that Speaks to his mother (Thetis is the sea-goddess). Pleads to her to convince Zeus to help the Trojans win so the Greeks will see how important Achilles was to them. Captures Achilles in the posture of a thinker. Sitting by the sea Looking back to Greece Thinks about going home Cries- Cries because he will not win eternal fame in Troy- Then considers to just have a long undistinguished life Achilles is a tragic character because he will never have a happy outcome like Heracles life. Begins to understand his mistake of taking away Achilles prize. Sends 3 ambassadors with gifts to Achilles. Offers Achilles back what he lost Im going to go home Makes Achilles say Im going to think about it in the morning I will not return to the battle until the Trojans are threatening my home. He has moved from a position of firmly going home to eventually returning to battle, BUT under certain condition....
