Test 1 Name: _________________________________________________ Essays: 20 points each Recall: Answer one of the following two questions 1. Water has a very high specific heat, heat of vaporization and cohesion. Define each term and explain how each of these is critical to “life as we know it”. Specific heat is the amount of heat energy required to raise the temperature of 1g of a substance 1 o Centigrade. The fact that waters specific heat is high means that it takes a lot of heat to raise the temperature of water, or conversely, that water can give off a lot of heat before it's temperature drops. This has implications for life on the ecosystem and organismal levels. At the ecosystem level, the fact that water can gain or release large amounts of heat before changing temperature means that bodies of water help to moderate environmental temperature fluctuations. During the day, or the summer, bodies of water absorb large amounts of heat from solar radiation and the surrounding environment, thus limiting the heating of that
