Elizabeth Hight September 18, 2007 Chapter 7 Chapter Seven-Socioemotional Development in Infancy A. Learning Goal One a. What is the nature of an infant’s emotions and how do they change? i. An infants emotion at an early age includes surprise, interest, joy, anger, sadness, fear and disgust. These emotions appear as early as six months. As the infant grows, the child shows empathy, embarrassment, pride, shame and guilt. Researchers believe that emotions also have a biological background. b. What is temperament and how does it develop in infancy? i. There are many ways to describe temperament. For example, Chess and Thomas identified three types of children: easy, difficult, and slow to warm up. Kagan described children as having a behavioral inhibition. Rothbart and Bates classified children by extraversion, negative affectivity, and effortful control or self-regulation. Gender helps shape temperament because mothers often respond to girls rather than boys, and cultural differences are linked to parents attitude and behavior. c.
