Haithum Nokta Bmgt198f, FP08 Starbucks and Conservation International Study Questions: 1. What does “corporate social responsibility” (CSR) mean to Starbucks? What are the aims of Starbucks’ CSR initiatives? In 1999, Starbucks created a completely separate Corporate Social Responsibility department to oversee involvement in “literacy programs, community volunteering, environmental affairs, shade grown coffee, and international relief funds”. In turn, in 2001, Starbucks had donated $7.3 Billion to relief funds. The CSR department had two roles. The first was to gather all relevant players together before any public announcement or public policy would be announced. The second role of the CSR department was to “'make sure [Starbucks] did what [they] say [they're] going to do'”. Making sure Starbucks followed through on its word is a big part of the Corporate Social Responsibility Department at Starbucks. 2. What role do non-governmental organizations (NGOs), such as Conservation International and TransFair, play in Starbucks’ CSR program?
