In the story Gift of the Magi by O. Henry, I believe that the core conflict is poverty. When reading the story in its entirety one finds that the main character Della and her husband, Jim, both make a lavish decision to sell their most prized possessions in order to obtain a Christmas present for each other.I believe that there are two themes to this story that run together and that is love and sacrifice. This is discovered as you read the story and see first how poor the couple was and then how eachmade the decision to give up their most prized possession in order to obtain the perfect gift for the other.Three of the literary techniques that I was able to identify were Irony, Rising Action, and Conflict.Irony was used at the end of the story, when the couples exchanged gifts that now are viewed as
