NSG 5002 WEEK 5 ASSINGMENT 1 DISCUSSIONNursing professional socialization is a process in which a nurse develops their own professional identity, and then they internalize this identity of being a nurse (Zarshanas et al., 2014). In this process, nurses also assume a sense of belonging to the profession. There are many experiences that nurses go through that aid them in identifying as a nurse. At one time in the late hours of the night as a hospital floor nurse, I was collecting a stool sample when it suddenly occurred to me that this is a very abnormal way to spend your Saturday night for anyone other than a nurse, and it made me chuckle. It was at that time that I grasped the concept of nursing professional socialization! Socialization into nursing begins with nursing school, and it is important that nursing students do not get the feeling that more experienced nurses “eat their young”. Professional socialization continues throughout a nurse’s lifetime (Dinmohammadi, Peyrovi, & Mehrdad, 2013).
