HUM 111 CLASSICAL GREECE I: POLITICS AND WAR Professor Sonia Sorrell Chronology : Ionian Revolt: 499BC Persian Wars: Delian League: 478BC Golden Age of Athens: 480-430BC (Pericles) Peloponnesian War: 431-404BC Rise of the Greek poleis during the Archaic Period Sparta: Peloponnesus; Messenians = helots Education; position of women Athens: Attica, patron deity = Athena Pros of Democracy: Democracy at Athens is far cry from democracy of today, first time people allowed to rule themselves, even poor citizens could vote theoretically, austricism—way to diffuse tension for individuals who cause trouble, ostricons—small piece of pottery, vote by scratching name of candidate and throwing it in pile, vote for one individual who they wanted to leave town for ten years, way to get rid of “thorns in side” and revolutionaries, famous historian named Thucydides—he was austricized and was able to write about Peloponnesian Wars, and become first true historian, first to leave gods and goddesses out Cons of Democracy: Only male citizens could vote, which was only 15% of population in ancient Athens, many were foreigners, so couldn’t vote, direct democracy, had to be in Athens to vote on the day of voting, the wealthy aristocrats were the ones who could afford to drop everything and vote, open to all, but hard to get there, Americans don’t have to go to Washington to vote (we have representative democracy, not direct), was the beginning of democracy, Education—not controlled by state, by families, hired private tutors, aristocratic only, poor farmers needed sons in field, no public schools like Sparta, slaves could serve as tutors, when Athens attacked island or areas of Agean took men and women as slaves back to Athens, Egypt was the only exception to the slave system of the ancient world, not based on race (any person they conquered), if there were well-trained artisans/princes, sold at high price as tutors for wealthy families, one on one type of
