THE SIGNIFICANCE OF COMMUNICATION SKILLS IN HUMANRESOURCES MANAGEMENT (HRM) AS A MEANS OF INCREASEIN PRODUCTIVITYCHAPTER 11.0 INTRODUCTION1.1 OVERVIEWCommunication studies on the hospitality and hotel industry arefairly underveloped within the academic realm. This is concerningconsidering the abundance of academic research available oncommunication in business and other industries, and the importantrole communication plays in these industries. Working in thehospitality and hotel industry requires working with people, be theguest or colleagues. Therefore communication is a key skill requiredwithin this industry for processes to work efficiently. Communicationis a transferable skill across all industries; however, itsimplementation requires consistent work and maintenance for theprocess to become organic and effective (Hedman & Valo 2015;Saurabh & Chattopadhyay 2013).1.2 BACKGROUND TO THE STUDYCommunication, no matter the medium and classification hasbecome the unifying force or glue that has brought countries of theworld into a state proxy and global proximity (Ekene 2015), The roleof communication in organisational effectiveness both in adeveloped and developing ecnomy cannot be overemphasized.Communication serves as an important tool whereby the goals,policies, procedures ad mission of any particular organisation can beexpressed to the employees to ensure effectiveness and efficiency.As opined by Ting-Toomey & Dorgee (2018), it is throughcommunication that workers in the organisation socialise by sharingcommon ideas and feelings among themselves and also learn aboutthe prevalent culture that shapes their behaviour and ideology inthe organisation. As cited by Gomathy (2018), “the art ofcommunication is the language of leadership” - James Humes, theHuman Resource manager is a person who is to have leadershipskills which includes power packed communicative skills.It isinevitable for the managers to pass on information and receiveinformation amongst themselves and also with their teams. It isimportant not only to communicate but effectively communicate.
